The U.S. Constitution in Light of Eternity

The Preamble

So What Happened?

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Liberty is an important part of Scripture and the ways of God. He proclaimed a Sabbath year of rest every seven years. Every 50th year is a year of "Liberty."

Leviticus 25:10, "And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family."

Servitude was limited in scope and to no more than 6 years, if a person was a Hebrew.

Deuteronomy 15:12-18, "And if thy brother, an Hebrew man, or an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee. And when thou sendest him out free from thee, thou shalt not let him go away empty: Thou shalt furnish him liberally out of thy flock, and out of thy floor, and out of thy winepress: of that wherewith the LORD thy God hath blessed thee thou shalt give unto him. And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee: therefore I command thee this thing to day. And it shall be, if he say unto thee, I will not go away from thee; because he loveth thee and thine house, because he is well with thee; Then thou shalt take an aul, and thrust it through his ear unto the door, and he shall be thy servant for ever. And also unto thy maidservant thou shalt do likewise. It shall not seem hard unto thee, when thou sendest him away free from thee; for he hath been worth a double hired servant to thee, in serving thee six years: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all that thou doest."

True liberty can only be experienced by Christians since it is the freedom from the bondage of sin.

Romans 8:21, "Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God."

It is the Holy Spirit that grants liberty.

2 Corinthians 3:17, "Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."

The gospel is the proclamation of liberty to the captives.

Isaiah 61:1, "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;"

Liberty is the freedom from imprisonment.

Acts 26:32, "Then said Agrippa unto Festus, This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Caesar."

It is freedom from oppression, Exodus and Judges. 

It is the ability to lead a quiet and peaceably life in all Godliness and honesty.

1 Timothy 2:1-3, "I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;"

Liberty is considered being able to do whatever one wants to do.

Judges 17:6, "In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes."

It is considered by some as being a status that is purchased.

Acts 22:28, "And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born."

It was these false concepts that the constitution sought to eliminate.

It is truth that sets a people free, so liberty includes the free flow of the truth.

John 8:32, "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

Liberty is the freedom to do what is godly and honest. it is not the ability to be malicious.

1 Peter 2:16, "As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God."

It is a freedom from the threat of imprisonment, coercion, and oppression. It is vitally important to the founding of a nation.
