The U.S. Constitution in Light of Eternity

The Preamble

So What Happened?

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

...provide for the common defense...

Common defense refers to a defense of all people united under the Constitution of the United States. No one is to be excluded.

When speaking of spiritual defense, the Greek word used in the New Testament is apologia, which is the word from which we get apology. This word means to answer to clear oneself. Defense is responding to an attack to make matters clear. It is defending yourself against false information.

Undefended cities attract and encourage enemies to attack. It is important to provide defenses against potential enemies in order to ward off possible attack.

Ezekiel 38:11-12, "And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates, To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land."

However, no defense system is a guarantee that there will not be those who can conquer and defeat a city. God promised Israel that they would defeat nations that were mightier than themselves, and even cities with walls up to heaven.

Deuteronomy 9:1, "Hear, O Israel: Thou art to pass over Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fenced up to heaven,"

Only God can provide the ultimate defense, and this comes only to those who trust Him.

Psalm 5:11-12, "But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee. For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield."

Scriptures condemns those that do not seek help from God for defense. It is important our country not fall prey to trusting in man, technology, and numbers for defense.

Isaiah 31:1, "Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!"

Defenses are important for general safety, but they are useless without God's protection on a righteous citizenship.
