Article 2, Section 1, Paragraphs 7-8
The President shall, at stated Times, receive for his Services, a Compensation, which shall neither be increased nor diminished during the Period for which he shall have been elected, and he shall not receive within that Period any other Emolument from the United States, or any of them.
Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:—"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
Presidential Oath
An oath or vow is made to focus our human and spiritual attention on a specific primary purpose. Anything that is not part of the oath and is not directly necessary to the fulfillment of the oath is discarded or left undone.
Scripture provides for this in what is called the vows of a Nazarite. Such a person would demonstrate their complete preoccupation in fulfilling their promise, by not cutting their hair and restricting their diet, until their mission was completely fulfilled.
Numbers 6:4-8, "All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels even to the husk. All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the LORD, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow. All the days that he separateth himself unto the LORD he shall come at no dead body. He shall not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his brother, or for his sister, when they die: because the consecration of his God is upon his head. All the days of his separation he is holy unto the LORD."
God appointed Samson, before he was conceived, to have a single purpose in his life, that of delivering Israel from the Philistines. Because of this mission, his mother was told she was to watch her diet and ensure that his hair was not shaved.
Judges 13:5, "For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines."
Judges 13:7, "But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death."
Unfortunately, Samson’s lack of focus and understanding caused him to lead a very selfish and immoral life. Instead of being the stellar example of the power the saints will have when they enter Heaven’s glory, he serves as an example of why humans must be kept weak and incapacitated.
At one point Paul took a Nazarite vow, desirous to get to Jerusalem for the feast days. Everyone knew he was on a mission before God, and so they did not stand in his way.
Acts 18:18-21, "And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn his head in Cenchrea: for he had a vow. And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews. When they desired him to tarry longer time with them, he consented not; But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus."
When the President takes the oath to uphold the Constitution, he is on a mission to do nothing else. As president, he needs to know the extent of what a vow entails.
