The U.S. Constitution in Light of Eternity

by Rev. Clinton Macomber

Article 2, Section 1, Paragraphs 7-8

The President shall, at stated Times, receive for his Services, a Compensation, which shall neither be increased nor diminished during the Period for which he shall have been elected, and he shall not receive within that Period any other Emolument from the United States, or any of them.

What Happened?

Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:—"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Presidential Wages

The President is to be reimbursed with a wage for serving in office. This shall be formally set up so that there is no question about when the money will be paid, and how much will be granted.

This wage cannot be changed during the term served. This keeps congress from manipulating the president by awarding or punishing him by changing the wage. It also protects the taxpayer (somewhat) from a lack of stability in salaries.

Matthew 10:10, "Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat [stipend, wages]."

Biblically this is fair. Workers are worthy of hire. The limits on pay are such as not to include any other fees or wages from the states or any other form. This is important. This keeps the president free to serve his office, and not become obligated to serve specific interests for their pay bonus.

The great leaders in Scripture were not in need of a tax to pay their salaries. Leaders like Moses, Aaron, Joshua, the judges and prophets lived off the income their farms or family provided. Gifts were accepted in some situations. By living simply, their needs were very limited. Abundance is an unnecessary burden.

The danger comes from the serving of self-interests, of which “donations” to the party of the president are known to serve. The salary enables the president to focus on the needs of the country and not fall into the trap of using government to further his own interests, as Uzziah, king of Judah did.

2 Chronicles 26:10, "Also he built towers in the desert, and digged many wells: for he had much cattle, both in the low country, and in the plains: husbandmen also, and vine dressers in the mountains, and in Carmel: for he loved husbandry."
