The U.S. Constitution in Light of Eternity

by Rev. Clinton Macomber

Article 2, Section 1, Paragraph 6

What Happened?

In Case of the Removal of the President from Office, or of his Death, Resignation, or Inability to discharge the Powers and Duties of the said Office, the Same shall devolve on the Vice President, and the Congress may by Law provide for the Case of Removal, Death, Resignation or Inability, both of the President and Vice President, declaring what Officer shall then act as President, and such Officer shall act accordingly, until the Disability be removed, or a President shall be elected.*

Congress Makes Law of Replacement

Congress did this by amending the Constitution. This reaction was overkill, as a simple decision on the issue would have been sufficient.

Inability has been overstressed today. This clause is for the replacement of a president who can no longer serve. It is not intended to cover brief periods of incapacity.

Having Congress make the decision of the replacement is proper, as this falls to the job of the elders of the land. The elders have the right to challenge the decision of the previous officer when it comes it his replacement. An example is seen when Solomon died and Rehoboam was to sit on the throne of Israel. In this case, the bulk of Israel left the throne to establish a less expensive and more hospitable throne.

1 Kings 12:16-17, "So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents. But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them."

Leadership of a people ultimately falls as the responsibility of the representatives of the people. When these elders choose evil leaders, the whole country suffers. What complicates matters is that once a leader is issued the powers of government, it is harder to remove that person. The American system was designed to provide frequent opportunity for the removal of officials. Fortunately for this world, God monitors governments and will hold them accountable.

Ezekiel 34:2, "Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto the shepherds; Woe be to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves! should not the shepherds feed the flocks?"
