Article 2, Section 1, Paragraph 6
In Case of the Removal of the President from Office, or of his Death, Resignation, or Inability to discharge the Powers and Duties of the said Office, the Same shall devolve on the Vice President, and the Congress may by Law provide for the Case of Removal, Death, Resignation or Inability, both of the President and Vice President, declaring what Officer shall then act as President, and such Officer shall act accordingly, until the Disability be removed, or a President shall be elected.*
The Vice President as Stand-in
This whole clause has been replaced by amendment.
The Vice President is to be present to act as President whenever the President cannot fulfill his obligations. This clause is used quite often lately. It enables our government to always have someone who can make a decision should one be required in an emergency.
Such a clause is not necessary in the Kingdom of Heaven. Leaders there will not have to undergo surgeries, will not become incapacitated due to illness, will not fail due to brain damage or mental disorders, or go into hiding due to fear of being killed. God’s leaders will have eternal life, and the ability to offer healing to the nations.
Biblically there is precedence for the replacement of the leader due to death, or an inability to carry out important duties. As a result of many years of investment into forming the government into one that functions well, an aged king could still govern. The transition between Moses and Joshua went well, because Joshua was there from the beginning with Moses, as his assistant.
Deuteronomy 34:9, "And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses."
