The U.S. Constitution in Light of Eternity

by Rev. Clinton Macomber

Article 2, Section 1, Paragraph 3

What Happened?

The Electors shall meet in their respective States, and vote by Ballot for two Persons, of whom one at least shall not be an Inhabitant of the same State with themselves. And they shall make a List of all the Persons voted for, and of the Number of Votes for each; which List they shall sign and certify, and transmit sealed to the Seat of the Government of the United States, directed to the President of the Senate. The President of the Senate shall, in the Presence of the Senate and House of Representatives, open all the Certificates, and the Votes shall then be counted. The Person having the greatest Number of Votes shall be the President, if such Number be a Majority of the whole Number of Electors appointed; and if there be more than one who have such Majority, and have an equal Number of Votes, then the House of Representatives shall immediately chuse by Ballot one of them for President; and if no Person have a Majority, then from the five highest on the List the said House shall in like Manner chuse the President. But in chusing the President, the Votes shall be taken by States, the Representation from each State having one Vote; A quorum for this purpose shall consist of a Member or Members from two thirds of the States, and a Majority of all the States shall be necessary to a Choice. In every Case, after the Choice of the President, the Person having the greatest Number of Votes of the Electors shall be the Vice President. But if there should remain two or more who have equal Votes, the Senate shall chuse from them by Ballot the Vice President.*

So What Happened?

The office of President has become so overbearing, it has a direct influence on American citizens today. Instead of being a small entity that regulates commerce and interstate relationships, it has become so pervasive that it must be funded by American citizens. Regulations are so pervasive, not only are citizens afraid to break local laws, but the added County, State, and Federal laws are overwhelming.

Who becomes president directly affects social programs on a local level, as well as community projects, and industrial economics. The president is chosen often for the one who will deliver the most toys to those voting. This is a distortion of the office and influence. States were to choose the president based on the needs for interstate protections.

The electoral college has been distorted so that two political parties run the voting process for the president, based on the votes for their party’s candidate in the general election. This is a complete lack of understanding of the balances needed, and the definition of the office of president. Presidential candidates run to gain the majority votes in a state. The political party they represent then chooses electors who are picked and commissioned to vote as instructed by the party. The state is locked out of the process. Both citizens and political parties expect to get something for putting the president in power. Federal controls have as a result become overwhelming. Until the U.S. Constitution is again honored and followed, we can expect more run-away government, and out of control spending.

As with any servant, what they do much be watched. When servants are not closely supervised, they bring their masters to shame. Officials are to be granted the respect of their office, but they are also to be held accountable for their actions. The US Government was designed to have checks and balances all along the way so that they will not become shameful.

Because of the incredible time that is necessary to watch public servants, it is important that government remain small and minimal. In fact, almost no government is the best government. Relying on majority opinion is a dangerous slope, unless all involved in the decision making are completely reliant on God for guidance, and His Word is hidden in their hearts, governing their every action. Unfortunately, even among “Christians” this is not the case.

Very ungodly, morally bankrupt, degenerate representatives and senators have been put in our government. These men and woman cannot, and will not make right choices. They consistently vote for what is evil and wrong, unconstitutional, harmful, immoral, etc. They are supposed to represent us in keeping the other government servants and their appointment and election proper and appropriate. Our representatives cannot be expected to do the job correctly, when they instead use the job to further their own gain and evil opinions.

The Electoral process for choosing a president is fraught with problems. It was re-written and is under scrutiny for another re-write. It is not the process that is wrong, but the allowance of the intent and letter of the constitution to be twisted, mangled and adjusted to fit the godless and lawless wishes of those we let control politics.

This idea of an electoral college divided the house when it was proposed to go into the Constitution and resulted in being a great compromise. Direct vote of the people was rejected by vote twice, and agreement was reached only toward the end of the Convention. Some knew that this would divide the outside elements as well. And cause discussions ever afterward.

There is a problem that goes beyond the plan adopted by the “Constitutional Fathers.” The plan has never been followed as prescribed. This passage has been amended, but even the Amendment is not followed. The fact that the electors have not been independent agents to vote as they deem fit is one problematic area that has been ignored throughout the life of the Constitution.

The problem with the Presidential office begins with the disregard of how this person is elected. Even though the Constitution has been changed, it has not changed that much in this area. The political party stranglehold should be shut down by a return to the rules. One would have a very strong case that our Presidents were not elected constitutionally, and thus, the office has been vacant for many years!

As the process stood upon approval of the Constitution, it satisfied the requirements for a balance of power with a representation of State interests while allowing representative citizens make their voice heard. Instead, the President is chosen within the two major parties (Republican and Democrat) and electors are excess baggage and nothing but robots hired to “satisfy” legal challenges.
