The U.S. Constitution in Light of Eternity

by Rev. Clinton Macomber

Article 2, Section 1, Paragraph 3

What Happened?

The Electors shall meet in their respective States, and vote by Ballot for two Persons, of whom one at least shall not be an Inhabitant of the same State with themselves. And they shall make a List of all the Persons voted for, and of the Number of Votes for each; which List they shall sign and certify, and transmit sealed to the Seat of the Government of the United States, directed to the President of the Senate. The President of the Senate shall, in the Presence of the Senate and House of Representatives, open all the Certificates, and the Votes shall then be counted. The Person having the greatest Number of Votes shall be the President, if such Number be a Majority of the whole Number of Electors appointed; and if there be more than one who have such Majority, and have an equal Number of Votes, then the House of Representatives shall immediately chuse by Ballot one of them for President; and if no Person have a Majority, then from the five highest on the List the said House shall in like Manner chuse the President. But in chusing the President, the Votes shall be taken by States, the Representation from each State having one Vote; A quorum for this purpose shall consist of a Member or Members from two thirds of the States, and a Majority of all the States shall be necessary to a Choice. In every Case, after the Choice of the President, the Person having the greatest Number of Votes of the Electors shall be the Vice President. But if there should remain two or more who have equal Votes, the Senate shall chuse from them by Ballot the Vice President.*

Majority of the Whole

The problem of majority is the risk of sacrificing the right for what is emotionally or soulishly desired instead of what is appropriate. Popularity is often the desire of people in general who do not have a solid Biblical standard by which to guide and guard their hearts and actions.

Sin and the sinner is what draws a crowd in a deviant society. Committing sin is what activates a crowd. Unless the crowd has been redeemed and their interests are holy, the decisions made by a majority are going to be consistently wrong. Unfortunately, public sentiment can be easily swayed. The writers of the Constitution hoped that the godliness of the American people would sway them toward making qualified and educated decisions and against decisions made by whim.

The reality, until Christ comes and establishes righteousness, is that people are not going to follow the narrow and lonely path of doing the right thing. Instead they settle for what they think will make them popular and widely accepted. This results in compromise, accepting the “less of two evils” and etc.

In fact, God teaches us not to count on many, but the few. Gideon found he could win a major war with just 300 men, because God is to get the glory.

1 Samuel 14:6, "And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few."

Leviticus 26:8, "And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword."

Psalm 33:16, "There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength."

One of the blessings of being a child of God is the ability to know that one day the nations will seek God and honor Him. No longer will sin be as enticing as it is to people today. Those that are left on the earth will understand the importance of not letting sin enter their lives, because of the ruin it always brings.
