The U.S. Constitution in Light of Eternity

by Rev. Clinton Macomber

Article 2, Section 1, Paragraph 1

What Happened?

The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America. He shall hold his Office during the Term of four Years, and, together with the Vice President, chosen for the same Term, be elected, as follows:

Vested

Vests can be removed.

Vested is to have unconditional power and authority. It is a full guarantee of a legal right, benefit or privilege (Merriam-Webster). The President was to have executive authority guaranteed. Other branches of the government would not be able to wrest this authority from the person holding the office.

God is the one who grants such authority, and he has given such power to governments.

Romans 13:1, "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God."

The power vested by God in the President is to be a terror to evil-doers, lawbreakers and the immoral. When a child of God is being obedient, there is nothing to fear. Instead we can be thankful for what God has done.

The problem is the governments ignore the source of their authority and they spurn God and the things that are righteous. They distort their power and use it (at times) against the righteous. When they become a terror to those who seek to obey the law, they undermine their ability to govern, and cannot trust their closest friends.

The term "vested" is a temporary situation. It is an authority and privilege that is worn at times, and then laid aside, or given to another. It is similar to the "mantle" of the prophet.

1 Kings 19:19, "So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him."
