The U.S. Constitution in Light of Eternity

by Rev. Clinton Macomber

Article 1, Section 10, Paragraph 1

What Happened?

No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation; grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal; coin Money; emit Bills of Credit; make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts; pass any Bill of Attainder, ex post facto Law, or Law impairing the Obligation of Contracts, or grant any Title of Nobility.

Limits on Lawmaking

Titles mean nothing to God!

This portion is a moral duty of Government. It gives us reason why legislation should not become too specific. General moral guidelines should have been set up when this Country was founded. Each case would then be evaluated according to these guiding rules of conduct and behavior.

God’s Word is the founding document of the Nation of His people. It is what sets us apart from the rest of the world and the way things are generally done. His laws enable us to express glory and honor to God.

1 Peter 2:9, "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:"

Jewish history has demonstrated the danger of using previous ‘rulings’ to form law. Rulings become layered and the original law is soon ignored and forgotten. While other rulings may shed insights and offer suggestions, the judge must make a decision based on the simple literal interpretation of law, not opinion.

States cannot create laws that change the interpretation of previous events and agreements. However, a country guided by clear delineated moral principles will never be presented a situation that is not addressed. Of course, such law has already been given to us in Scripture. Trouble arises where a judge actually sets law in his judgments and lawmakers are relegated to merely suggesting law.

Matthew 23:23, "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone."

Titles are worthless to God or a Country. People are to respect others in different ways based on their station in life, or their divinely appointed office. Human titles do not reflect the ways of God. Israel suffered for their vain desires.

1 Samuel 12:12, "And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said unto me, Nay; but a king shall reign over us: when the LORD your God was your king."
