The U.S. Constitution in Light of Eternity

by Rev. Clinton Macomber

Article 1, Section 10, Paragraph 1

What Happened?

No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation; grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal; coin Money; emit Bills of Credit; make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts; pass any Bill of Attainder, ex post facto Law, or Law impairing the Obligation of Contracts, or grant any Title of Nobility.

States Only to Use Coin Money

Value Coins are Money.

Money is a source of great contention. The power to setup and change a monetary standard is a powerful tool to use on a country. By adjusting the standard up or down, you can plunge people into poverty or riches. To provide more stability across the United States, this power was left to the Federal Government.

States were not to coin money or create money. They were not to even offer statements of credit. When the States pay for goods and services, they were to use gold or silver coins. If this were followed, our State governments would be in better economic shape.

God set the standard for weights and monetary value, and gave that standard to the Tabernacle to be kept permanently. Our Government should have done the same thing. A standard should have been made and this standard kept. Any money used should be real value coins, instead of symbolic value or credit vouchers (dollars).

God warns us to not lay up treasure on this earth. Even real value coins lose value to corrosive elements of tarnish, rust, scratches, etc. Paper is a much worse investment!

Matthew 6:20, "But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:"

Living frugally, free from common obligations, is an important way to live. God asks that our investments go to His work, so we can enjoy for eternity what earth can never offer.

1 Timothy 6:8-9, "And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition."
