The U.S. Constitution in Light of Eternity

by Rev. Clinton Macomber

Article 1, Section 8, Paragraphs 14-15

To make Rules for the Government and Regulation of the land and naval Forces;

What Happened?

To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;

Regulation of Forces

Congress is to agree on what rules govern land and Naval armed forces. If kept simple and on moral grounds, these rules can have great impact. If each aspect and situation is regulated, these rules become cumbersome and unbearable. Our Lord Jesus was able to summarize the whole law of the Scripture with a couple simple rules.

Matthew 22:37-40, "Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."

By standing for righteousness, there are certain things that must be done to eradicate evil and immorality. A love of God will propel forces to stand for the most noble and pure causes. It would also limit the need for numerous laws.

Secondarily, it is important that we treat others as we wish to be treated. This would govern the rules of capture and imprisonment, while righteousness would temper the pampering of the enemy.

A nation that stands for integrity and honor would not find themselves being threatened very much. God would protect such a nation against many forms of harm.

Psalm 144:15, "Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD."
