Article 1, Section 8, Paragraphs 1-4
The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;
To borrow Money on the credit of the United States;
To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes;
To establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization, and uniform Laws on the subject of Bankruptcies throughout the United States;
Congress Can Tax
There is a cost to running government. Congress was to determine how the finances would be collected.
Since the House of Representatives is made up of those who have been elected by smaller segments of the country, people would have a good chance of keeping taxes reasonable.
Tax collection is to be done outside the powers of the President. It was to be done through elected individuals in the Congress. This would be to insure taxation was not done without representation. It was also to insure that the collection would remain respectful, civil and fair.
The Christian realizes that we are citizens of heaven, but while "passing through" the world we are obligated to pay taxes imposed by governments.
Matthew 22:21, "They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s."
The Lord spent time with this hated segment of mankind, and willingly hosted them at His own house.
Mark 2:15, "And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him."
We must realize that greed is a result of the effects of sin. As long as we are in this world, we have to live with the effects of sin. It is best to pay taxes but vote to limit them.
