The U.S. Constitution in Light of Eternity

by Rev. Clinton Macomber

Article 1, Section 7, Paragraph 2

What Happened?

Every Bill which shall have passed the House of Representatives and the Senate, shall, before it become a Law, be presented to the President of the United States: If he approve he shall sign it, but if not he shall return it, with his Objections to that House in which it shall have originated, who shall enter the Objections at large on their Journal, and proceed to reconsider it. If after such Reconsideration two thirds of that House shall agree to pass the Bill, it shall be sent, together with the Objections, to the other House, by which it shall likewise be reconsidered, and if approved by two thirds of that House, it shall become a Law. But in all such Cases the Votes of both Houses shall be determined by yeas and Nays, and the Names of the Persons voting for and against the Bill shall be entered on the Journal of each House respectively. If any Bill shall not be returned by the President within ten Days (Sundays excepted) after it shall have been presented to him, the Same shall be a Law, in like Manner as if he had signed it, unless the Congress by their Adjournment prevent its Return, in which Case it shall not be a Law.

So What Happened?

First, God’s Law (the Holy Bible) is not the standard by which laws are evaluated. Instead, evolutionary and humanistic philosophies are used. These are not a standard, but a set of thoughts at any given moment that constantly change for the worse.

A nation that is not rooted deeply in God’s unchanging values and Word, will flounder and stray far from God, justice, morality, dignity, honor, respect, safety, health, etc.

Second, one’s endorsement is not considered a sacred gift from God, to be used only as God directs. Instead, it is viewed as being owned by the individual to be used as whim would dictate.

Third, the purpose of veto has been abandoned. Veto is something created by God to ensure the well being of the home and community. The family is to work together to honor God and protect each other. This principal has been applied to government, but veto power is not used for righteousness sake.

The results of forgetting these three principals have left our nation wide open for terrorism, economic collapse, "acts of God," and any other harmful action. The extensive and unhindered growth of the U.S. Government has resulted in a government that lacks discipline, respect, responsibility, cohesion, direction, focus or meaning.

Instead government is seen to be a huge industry bent on self-preservation, and the amassing of great power and wealth. Laws are passed constantly that are harmful to community, state and federal moral interests. Veto is not used to stop this corruption, but instead has become a political tool of negotiation to solidify more power.

The whole process of writing and testing possible laws is not done under extreme fear and respect for God and His Word. Instead, lawyers write them, making them hard to understand, extremely verbose, and often unenforceable.

Instead of the laws being tested by the lawmakers and president, it is tested in the courts. It is not the purpose of the courts to determine the law of the land. The courts are to see that the law is applied fairly and appropriately. Our courts are handicapped because the laws they are given to enforce are vague, awkward, and inconsistent.

Our legislature needs a revival, a deep conviction of sin, and sincere repentance from even the appearance of evil. They need to quit making and passing new laws, and work to repeal existing laws and make only necessary laws that are simple and enforceable.

The President needs to carefully consider the impact each law, making sure it is simple, understandable and easily enforced and in complete harmony with Biblical law.

Officials must understand they have a responsibility to see that God is honored and that they do not support anything contrary to what God has established as proper and acceptable.

Compromise is not right and should never be the standard of government. Settling differences through compromise is proof that neither side is on the side of truth and righteousness. It is proof that neither side has a standard of conduct. Any distortion of what is right leaves nothing but unrighteousness. If a law cannot be made to be righteous, it should not be made at all.
