The U.S. Constitution in Light of Eternity

by Rev. Clinton Macomber

Article 1, Section 7, Paragraph 2

What Happened?

Every Bill which shall have passed the House of Representatives and the Senate, shall, before it become a Law, be presented to the President of the United States: If he approve he shall sign it, but if not he shall return it, with his Objections to that House in which it shall have originated, who shall enter the Objections at large on their Journal, and proceed to reconsider it. If after such Reconsideration two thirds of that House shall agree to pass the Bill, it shall be sent, together with the Objections, to the other House, by which it shall likewise be reconsidered, and if approved by two thirds of that House, it shall become a Law. But in all such Cases the Votes of both Houses shall be determined by yeas and Nays, and the Names of the Persons voting for and against the Bill shall be entered on the Journal of each House respectively. If any Bill shall not be returned by the President within ten Days (Sundays excepted) after it shall have been presented to him, the Same shall be a Law, in like Manner as if he had signed it, unless the Congress by their Adjournment prevent its Return, in which Case it shall not be a Law.

Votes Are Recorded

Everyone must account of himself to God.

When the Houses vote to overturn a veto of the President, their name and vote is recorded in the journal with the objections of the President.

This enables the public to check on the Representatives and state legislatures to be able to check on the Senators. Corruption can be exposed and changes made, if necessary.

Having to make decisions about laws that will impact the nation is not an easy chore. A properly qualified candidate would realize that he must answer to God. Pleasing people, bettering his place in society, seeking prestige, coveting riches, etc.; should have no impact on a godly person. Government representatives must have a holy fear of God. A lack of such respect is dangerous to the office holder as well as to everyone in society.

Psalm 2:11, "Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling."

A child of God is aware that everything is being recorded and directly impacts his position for all eternity. It should not matter whether or not a journal is kept of his activities, because his life is honorable and above reproach in everything.

Every believer in Christ has to give an account of himself.

Romans 14:12, "So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God."

Jewish officials are expected to understand God’s law and so be able representatives. We should expect nothing less in the United States.

Micah 3:1, "And I said, Hear, I pray you, O heads of Jacob, and ye princes of the house of Israel; Is it not for you to know judgment?"

Ecclesiastes 11:9, "Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment."
