The U.S. Constitution in Light of Eternity

by Rev. Clinton Macomber

Article 1, Section 6, Paragraph 2

What Happened?

No Senator or Representative shall, during the Time for which he was elected, be appointed to any civil Office under the Authority of the United States, which shall have been created, or the Emoluments whereof shall have been encreased during such time; and no Person holding any Office under the United States, shall be a Member of either House during his Continuance in Office.

No other Civil Offices

Pride, lust of power, and drive for money are dangerous for officials.

After allowing the legislature to set their own wages, they wanted to make sure that the legislators would not appoint themselves other jobs, on top of their lawmaking job. This would be a disaster if they could design or take other government jobs and so entrench themselves into the government.

A legislator thus is not allowed to take another government job, or hold one held before the election. It must be given up. This protects the citizens from legislators creating too much power for themselves, and hording power and incomes.

Matthew 23:12, "And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted."

Proverbs 16:5, "Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished."

Obadiah 3-4, "The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground? Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD."
