The U.S. Constitution in Light of Eternity

by Rev. Clinton Macomber

Article 1, Section 5, Paragraph 4

What Happened?

Neither House, during the Session of Congress, shall, without the Consent of the other, adjourn for more than three days, nor to any other Place than that in which the two Houses shall be sitting.

More than 3 day adjournment

Consent is to mutually agree with another.

After three days things stink! This is an adaptation of what Mary told the Lord Jesus.

John 11:39, "Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days."

It was expected that most sessions would be less than three days long. If one house refused to meet while the other house was in session, it could disrupt the law making process for the whole year.

The impact would also affect the livelihood of the members, cause undue stress on the families, and make service in the Houses a real chore.

By keeping things simple, having the houses both meet at the same time, bills passed in one could be voted on by the other house. Any disagreements could be hashed out before members went home.

There does not seem to be any evidence that this rule would have been considered if the present sessions could have been imagined.

They were not to meet in secret from the other house. Meetings were to be held in unison with the other house.

The Christian is to always remain focused in everything he does. He is to press to the mark. Taking unnecessary breaks is wasteful.

Hebrews 6:10-11, "For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:"

Philippians 3:13-15, "Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you."
