The U.S. Constitution in Light of Eternity

by Rev. Clinton Macomber

Article 1, Section 3, Paragraph 7

What Happened?

Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States: but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law.

Disqualification

The Senate can rule an official disqualified.

People can be swayed to make bad choices by being fooled. Israel chose Saul as their king, because he looked impressive and humble.

This soon changed so that he instead sinned and blamed the people for his sin.

1 Samuel 15:24, "And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice."

His background and lifestyle was demonic and evil. He should have been disqualified from office very quickly.

God loved David and made wonderful promises to him. Yet, God would not allow David to build the Temple due to the blood on his hands from being a man of war.

1 Chronicles 22:7-8, "And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God: But the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build an house unto my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my sight."

God speaks of driving leaders out of office. He told Isaiah to warn Shebna the Treasurer he would be driven from his station and state

Isaiah 22:19, "And I will drive thee from thy station, and from thy state shall he pull thee down."

When the Lord Jesus sets up His own kingdom, leaders will be thrown out of power.

Zechariah 1:21, "Then said I, What come these to do? And he spake, saying, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are come to fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it."

The disqualification was to extend to “any office of trust, profit or honor under the United States.”

The first concern was an office of trust. This is defined as: “assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something” [Webster]. “When a man assumes a public trust, he should consider himself as public property.” [Thomas Jefferson].

The second thing was profit. This is the handling of finances and assets.

The third was honor or respect. This covers any official position, be it judicial, law enforcement, clerical, or management in civil, federal or state government.
