Article 1, Section 3, Paragraph 2
Immediately after they shall be assembled in Consequence of the first Election, they shall be divided as equally as may be into three Classes. The Seats of the Senators of the first Class shall be vacated at the Expiration of the second Year, of the second Class at the Expiration of the fourth Year, and of the third Class at the Expiration of the sixth Year, so that one third may be chosen every second Year; and if Vacancies happen by Resignation, or otherwise, during the Recess of the Legislature of any State, the Executive thereof may make temporary Appointments until the next Meeting of the Legislature, which shall then fill such Vacancies*.
Divided into Three Classes
In Christ there is no “class” system.
A class is a group of individuals that have something in common. The Senate was to be divided into three classes so a third of the Senators are replaced every two years. This would provide stability and continuity to the Senate.
This is unnecessary in heaven. There is no class distinction before God.
Ephesians 6:9, "And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him."
Laws are not to change based on class distinctions.
Exodus 12:49, "One law shall be to him that is homeborn, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among you."
In fact, all class distinctions will be removed in the future among those on the earth.
Isaiah 24:2, "And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him."
The Senate was not designed to violate any of these Biblical instructions. The word “class” was to refer to educational distinction instead of social.
It must be remembered that the 6 year term comes from the limit to servitude that can be assessed upon a brother. These Senators were to be senior members of Society who have demonstrated an unusual degree of wisdom and understanding.
They would be appointed by the State Legislatures to serve our Country, representing their State and insuring that stability and wisdom guides our government.
President George Washington felt the Senate would be a council as in Acts 25:12 that could offer advice. When the Senate referred his Indian Treaty to committee without comment, the President’s Cabinet became his counsel instead.
Acts 25:12, "Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Caesar? unto Caesar shalt thou go."
The Senate was not a “class” but a group of older men who met to balance lawmaking with what is prudent.
