Article 1, Section 2, Paragraph 5
The House of Representatives shall chuse their Speaker and other Officers; and shall have the sole Power of Impeachment.
Speakers and Officers
Speakers should do little more than maintain order by their speaking ability.
The Representatives were to organize themselves so they could function efficiently.
The Representatives were given wide latitude in choosing rules of self-government.
The only title mentioned is Speaker. This person has quite a bit of power. He decides the agenda, how long debate will be, and how business will be conducted.
Of course, the representatives could vote changes in leadership at any time, and can vote in changes on the way things are done.
In Scripture, the one who is seen as speaker gains the greater respect and attention.
Acts 14:12, "And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker."
We are to make sure that evil speakers do not become established.
Psalm 140:11, "Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him."
The power of the tongue can sway people to evil or good.
The next study will deal with Impeachment, since it has become famous part of the political landscape.
