The U.S. Constitution in Light of Eternity

by Rev. Clinton Macomber

Article 1, Section 1

What Happened?

All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives.

Senate

The word “senate” is found in Acts and states that the High Priest called the Sanhedrin and Senate. These were the “ruling elders” of a Greek city.

Acts 5:21, "And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought."

The word is also found in the Greek translation of Exodus.

Exodus 12:21, "Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover."

The Biblical use of the word is for the secular rulers of the city. The Sanhedrin or “council” was for the religious leaders of the city.

The Greek word simply means “old man.” Our English word comes from the Latin and French words, meaning the same. Our English equivalent is “senior.”

By choosing this word, the intentions were that the Senators would be older men, chosen to make seasoned decisions about the legislation of the land.
